This is the Edexcel Foundation Tier GCSE Maths Paper 3... Show more

Foundation Tier Paper 3 is the calculator paper worth 80 marks total, giving you 1 hour 30 minutes to complete it. This means you've got just over a minute per mark, so pacing yourself is crucial.
You'll need the standard maths kit: ruler, protractor, compasses, calculator, and the formulae sheet that's provided. The paper clearly states that diagrams aren't drawn to scale unless specified, so don't try measuring them!
The key advice is brilliant: read each question carefully, show all your working, and try every question even if you're unsure. Partial marks are available when you show your method, even if the final answer isn't quite right.
Top Tip: The marks in brackets tell you how much time and effort each question deserves - use this to manage your time effectively!

These opening questions are designed to build your confidence with 1 mark each. Question 1 tests number recognition , while Question 2 covers percentage conversion (3/10 = 30%).
Algebraic simplification appears in Question 3 where m+m+m+m = 4m. This shows how algebra is just organised arithmetic. Question 4 tests unit conversion - remember that 1000g = 1kg, so 4000g = 4kg.
Ordering integers in Question 5 includes negative numbers. Remember that negative numbers get smaller as they move further from zero, so -5 is smaller than -2.
Remember: These early questions are your chance to rack up easy marks quickly - don't overthink them!

Question 6 combines area and perimeter calculations using a centimetre grid. For area, count the complete squares and estimate partial squares carefully. Each full square on the grid represents 1 cm².
Perimeter means the distance around the outside of the shape. Count along the grid lines that form the boundary, including any diagonal or curved sections by using the grid as your guide.
Grid questions are often worth 2 marks because they test both your understanding of the concepts and your ability to work accurately with visual information.
Smart Strategy: Always double-check your counting - it's easy to miss squares or count some twice when working with irregular shapes!

Question 7 covers probability language and calculations worth 3 marks total. The spinner has four sections (1, 2, 3, 2), so landing on 2 happens twice out of four times - that makes it "likely" since it's more than 50%.
For part (b), every number shown (1, 2, 3, 2) is less than 4, making this outcome "certain". Probability vocabulary is crucial: impossible (0), unlikely (<0.5), evens (0.5), likely (>0.5), certain (1).
Part (c) introduces complementary probability. If the probability of getting 5 is 0.4, then the probability of not getting 5 is 1 - 0.4 = 0.6. All probabilities must add up to 1.
Key Point: "Biased" simply means the dice isn't fair - some outcomes are more likely than others, which is why you're given specific probability values.

Question 8 tests your knowledge of mathematical shape names. A quadrilateral with 4 right angles and 4 equal sides is a square - don't overthink this one! Sometimes the simplest answer is correct.
The second part shows a 3D shape identification question. You need to recognise solid shapes from their drawn representations, which requires understanding how 3D objects appear in 2D diagrams.
Shape questions often appear straightforward but require precise mathematical vocabulary. Make sure you know the difference between squares and rectangles, or cubes and cuboids.
Study Tip: Create a quick reference list of 2D and 3D shape names with their properties - it's easy marks if you know them!

Question 9 is worth 6 marks and covers essential statistical measures. To find the median of 7, 9, 1, 5, first arrange in order: 1, 5, 7, 9. The median is the middle value, which is 6 (the average of 5 and 7).
The range is simply highest value minus lowest value: 9 - 1 = 8. This measures how spread out the data is.
Bar charts need accurate plotting with properly labelled axes. Each person gets their own bar with height matching their number of books. Use a ruler to ensure your bars are neat and the correct height.
Quick Check: Always arrange data in order before finding the median - it's impossible to find the middle value if numbers are jumbled!

Question 10 is worth 4 marks and tests time arithmetic through a real-world scenario. Wayne starts at 8:30 am, walks for 1 hour 45 minutes (reaching 10:15 am), rests 15 minutes (now 10:30 am), then walks 85 minutes more.
Converting 85 minutes to hours and minutes gives 1 hour 25 minutes. Adding this to 10:30 am gives 11:55 am. Since this is before 12 noon, Wayne does arrive in time.
Show your working clearly for time questions - convert everything to the same format and work through each step methodically. Examiners want to see your logical thinking process.
Time Tip: When dealing with mixed hours and minutes, convert everything to minutes, do the calculation, then convert back - it reduces errors!

Question 11 demonstrates reverse problem solving worth 3 marks. Gabriel multiplies by 5, adds 7, and gets 72. To find his original number, work backwards using inverse operations.
Start with 72, subtract 7 (gives 65), then divide by 5 (gives 13). So Gabriel's number was 13. Check: 13 × 5 + 7 = 65 + 7 = 72 ✓
This type of question tests your understanding that addition/subtraction and multiplication/division are opposite operations. Algebra provides another approach: if the number is n, then 5n + 7 = 72.
Double-Check Strategy: Always substitute your answer back into the original problem to verify it works - this catches arithmetic errors!

Question 12 combines pie chart interpretation with proportion calculations for 4 marks. The modal grade is the most common one, shown by the largest section (Pass at 150°).
To find the total number of students, use the fact that 7 students got distinction (30° section). Set up a proportion: if 30° represents 7 students, then 360° represents how many total students?
Proportion calculation: 360° ÷ 30° = 12, so 7 × 12 = 84 students total. Alternatively, 7 students per 30° means 360° ÷ 30° × 7 = 84 students.
Pie Chart Rule: The total degrees must equal 360°, and all sections should add up to this - use this to check your understanding!

Question 13 introduces distance-time graphs, a key GCSE topic. The graph shows Rowena's journey with horizontal sections representing stops (distance stays constant while time increases).
Part (a)(i) asks for travel time to the café. Reading from the graph, she starts at 1200 and reaches the café at 1220, taking 20 minutes. Part (a)(ii) requires reading the distance value where she stops - this is shown on the vertical axis.
Travel graphs tell stories through their shape: steep slopes mean fast travel, gentle slopes mean slow travel, and flat horizontal lines mean stopping. The vertical axis shows distance from starting point.
Graph Reading Tip: Use a ruler to draw light lines from key points to the axes - this ensures accurate readings and shows clear working!
