Resource management is all about understanding how we use water,... Show more

Ever wonder why some countries have water shortages whilst others deal with flooding? It's all down to rainfall, temperature and population size. More rain means more water (obviously), but higher temperatures cause evaporation, leaving less water for people to actually use.
When populations grow, everyone's fighting for the same water supply. This creates a water deficit - basically, there's not enough to go around. On the flip side, some lucky places have a water surplus with more than they need.
Energy security works similarly. HICs (High Income Countries) and NEEs (Newly Emerging Economies) are proper energy guzzlers because they're plugged into national grids and love their tech. Meanwhile, LICs (Low Income Countries) use way less energy and often rely on primary energy sources like wood or animal dung for fuel.
Quick Tip: Remember that energy security is about balancing what a country produces versus what it imports from abroad.
Natural hazards fall into two main camps: tectonic hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes) and climatic hazards (flooding, tornadoes, tropical storms, droughts). Here's the key bit - volcanoes only kick off at destructive and constructive plate margins, but earthquakes can happen at all three types.
Food insecurity is when people go hungry or don't get proper nutrition. Wealthier countries can subsidise farming (basically give farmers money they don't have to pay back) to keep food affordable, creating a food surplus. Poorer countries often face food deficits because they can't grow enough or afford to help their farmers.

The UK's water demand has shot up because we're all taking longer showers, washing cars more often, and watering our gardens. The average person uses 150 litres of treated water daily - that's mental when you think about it!
Our water footprint includes all the water used in the UK plus water used abroad to make stuff we import. When areas have too much water and others don't have enough, we use water transfer schemes to move it from surplus to deficit areas.
Plate margins are crucial for understanding where hazards strike. Destructive margins see plates smashing into each other, with the denser oceanic plate getting pushed under (subducted). Constructive margins have plates moving apart, letting magma rise up and create new crust. Conservative margins involve plates sliding past each other sideways.
Remember: Each type of plate margin creates different hazards, so knowing them helps predict where disasters might happen.
Energy exploitation comes with massive costs - building power stations, dams, and wind farms costs a fortune upfront. Then there's maintenance, fuel costs, and dealing with waste products. Environmentally, fossil fuels create nasty emissions, whilst nuclear power produces radioactive waste that needs careful handling.
The UK's gone mad for organic produce - food grown without chemicals, using natural fertilisers like animal manure instead. About 40% of UK food is imported, meaning we can eat strawberries in winter thanks to heated greenhouses and global trade.
This trend towards year-round availability of any food shows how wealthy nations have transformed their relationship with agriculture and seasons.
