Ever wondered what happens when ambition goes too far? Shelley uses Walton as a clever comparison to Victor, showing us two different paths ambitious people can take.
Both characters share striking similarities - they're obsessed with discovering dangerous mysteries and crave personal glory over wealth. Walton admits "I preferred glory to every enticement" whilst pursuing "the dangerous mysteries of ocean," much like Victor's scientific pursuits.
However, here's the crucial difference: Walton actually stops when lives are at risk, prioritising his crew's safety. Victor, on the other hand, becomes completely consumed by his ambition, neglecting his family and blaming fate rather than taking responsibility. His egotistical belief that "no one else has ever suffered a worse fate" shows how self-absorbed he's become.
Key insight: Walton serves as a foil character - someone whose contrasting choices highlight Victor's fatal flaws and show what could have been different.
Power corrupts, and nowhere is this clearer than in the relationship between Victor and his monster. What starts as scientific ambition quickly spirals into a deadly battle for control.
The monster's thirst for revenge stems from feeling abandoned and isolated. His chilling threat "I will watch you with the wiliness of a snake, that I may sting with its venom" uses plosive sounds and snake imagery to show his growing malevolence. He's become cunning, intelligent, and dangerous - everything Victor feared.
Victor's god complex is revealed through his desire that "a new species would bless me as its creator and source." The celestial language of wanting to learn "the secrets of heaven and earth" shows he's trying to compete with God himself. This hubris (excessive pride) becomes his downfall.
Remember: Shelley uses a semantic field of creation throughout to emphasise how Victor's playing God leads to chaos rather than glory.
