English Language Paper 1 Guide
Paper 1 tests your reading comprehension and creative writing skills. For Question 1 (4 marks), you'll simply identify four true statements from the text in 2-4 minutes. Easy points!
For Question 2 (8 marks), you'll analyse how the writer uses language. Spend 10 minutes crafting two detailed paragraphs. Follow this structure: Point → Technique + Evidence → Analysis of effect → Second technique + Evidence → Further analysis. Remember to dig deep into what the language shows or suggests.
Question 3 (8 marks) examines text structure. Use 10 minutes to write a cohesive paragraph explaining how the beginning establishes atmosphere, how the tone shifts throughout, and how the ending compares to the start. Always include the impact on you as a reader.
Tip: Question 4 (20 marks) requires you to agree with a given statement. Spend 30 minutes analysing both language and structure in separate paragraphs, always including evidence, analysis, and alternative interpretations.
For Question 5 (40 marks), you'll either write a description or a story based on a photo. This question is worth the most points, so do it first and allocate 50 minutes. Choose description over story for better results, and start with a punchy short sentence to grab attention. Consider pre-writing a story you can adapt to different prompts.
English Language Paper 2 Guide
Paper 2 focuses on non-fiction texts and comparison skills. Start with Question 1 (4 marks) by shading exactly four true statements – not more! This should take just 2-4 minutes.

Question 4 (16 marks) is the most challenging comparison question, asking about attitudes in both sources. Spend 25-30 minutes comparing either similarities OR differences (pick one approach). Include both language and structural analysis, comparing within each paragraph 2-3 times.
Finally, Question 5 (40 marks) requires non-fiction writing based on a statement. Allow 50-60 minutes to develop a clear argument, taking one definite side while acknowledging counter-arguments. Always consider your audience, link to wider topics, and employ a range of language and structural techniques for maximum impact.
