Ready to tackle your English Language GCSEs? These exam guides... Show more

Time management is absolutely crucial here - you've got 1 hour 45 minutes to tackle both reading analysis and creative writing. Spend your first 5 minutes properly reading the text, because understanding it well will make every question easier.
Section A focuses on analysing a fictional extract. Question 1 is your easiest 4 marks - just list four things from the specified lines in simple sentences. Question 2 asks how the writer uses language techniques like metaphors or sensory details, whilst Question 3 examines text structure using the STOPSEC method (Setting, Time, Opening, Perspective, Shift, Ending, Character).
The big one is Question 4 - worth 20 marks and 30 minutes. You'll get a statement about the text and need to argue how far you agree. Usually it's best to agree but show some debate. Use detailed PEAEAL paragraphs (Point, Evidence, Analysis, Effect, Alternative interpretation, Link) to really dig into key words and their effects.
Top Tip: For Question 5's creative writing, stick to the "Rule of 1" for stories - one setting, one character, one event, one hour. This keeps your narrative focused and prevents you from trying to cram too much into 45 minutes!

This paper's all about non-fiction texts and different writers' opinions - spend 10 minutes reading both sources carefully and noting their GAP (Genre, Audience, Purpose). Understanding why each text was written will help you spot the writers' contrasting perspectives.
Section A's comparison questions get progressively harder. Question 1 is straightforward - just pick four true statements. Question 2 wants you to summarise key differences between the sources using SQI (Statement, Quotation, Inference) - no fancy language analysis needed here. Question 3 brings back language analysis from Paper 1, focusing on how persuasive or descriptive techniques create specific effects.
Question 4 combines everything - comparing how both writers use language and structure to convey their different viewpoints. Use SQIME paragraphs (adding Method and Effect to your SQI) to show how writers deliberately choose techniques to influence readers.
The final opinion writing task needs careful planning around your specified format - whether it's a letter, speech, article, or leaflet. Use AAFORREESTY (rhetorical techniques) and remember to include counter-arguments before reinforcing your own position.
Remember: In Paper 2, always use the writers' actual names rather than just saying "the writer" - it makes your analysis sound much more sophisticated and shows you're engaging properly with the sources!
