How to Tackle AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1

GCSE English Language Paper 1 Complete Guide
Ever wondered why some students sail through English Language Paper 1 whilst others struggle? It's all about knowing exactly what each question demands and managing your time wisely.
Question 1 is your warm-up - just 4 minutes to find 4 specific things from a highlighted section. Always write down 5 points to be safe, keep them precise, and don't waste time writing full sentences. This question is basically free marks if you read carefully.
Question 2 digs into language techniques and needs 8 minutes of focused analysis. Highlight your passage, annotate like mad, and only use quotes that contain at least 2 devices. Structure each of your 3-4 paragraphs using PETAL format, and always ask yourself 'why?' to extend your analysis properly.
Question 3 switches to structural techniques across the whole text. Spend 8 minutes examining how the writer uses the start, middle, and end differently. Look for punctuation changes, standalone lines, dialogue shifts, and explain exactly what atmosphere these create for readers.
Quick Tip: For Questions 2 and 3, develop 3-4 solid paragraphs rather than rushing through loads of shallow points.
Question 4 is your big opinion piece - 20 minutes to agree or disagree with a statement about the text. You can partly agree and disagree, but focus more on backing your argument than spotting techniques. Write around 1.5 pages across roughly 4 paragraphs, always linking back to your main point.
Question 5 unleashes your creativity with 32 marks up for grabs. Be descriptive, be unique, but don't just tell a story - paint a scene instead. Use MAPSVA techniques, show don't tell, pick 3 main focuses to develop fully, and write at least 1.5 pages with sophisticated vocabulary.
