Key Concepts and Operations
Understanding fractions starts with knowing the basics. The denominator is the bottom number that shows how many parts the whole is split into, whilst the numerator (top number) shows how many parts you have.
When adding fractions, you need a common denominator first. Find the least common multiple of both denominators, then convert each fraction before adding the numerators together. For example, 1/5 + 3/7 becomes 7/35 + 15/35 = 22/35.
Multiplying fractions is actually easier than adding - just multiply the tops together and the bottoms together. For dividing fractions, flip the second fraction upside down (find its reciprocal) and multiply instead. Remember: "keep, change, flip"!
Top Tip: Always check if your answer can be simplified by finding common factors in the numerator and denominator.
Reverse percentages help you work backwards from sale prices. If something costs £84 after a 30% discount, you know £84 represents 70% of the original price. Divide by 70, then multiply by 100 to find the original cost (£120).
Using multipliers makes percentage calculations quicker. A 15% increase means multiplying by 1.15 (100% + 15% = 115% = 1.15). This method works brilliantly for compound interest and repeated percentage changes.
Standard form expresses very large or tiny numbers neatly. Move the decimal point to create a number between 1 and 10, then multiply by 10 to the appropriate power. Moving left gives positive powers, moving right gives negative powers.

These practice questions cover all the essential skills you've learned. Start with the fraction operations - remember to find common denominators for addition and subtraction, and convert mixed numbers to improper fractions when multiplying or dividing.
The percentage problems focus on real-world scenarios like shopping discounts and pay rises. Question 2 about the iPod sale price is a classic reverse percentage problem - the £40 represents 80% of the original price after a 20% discount.
For standard form practice, remember the key rule: numbers greater than 1 use positive powers of 10, whilst numbers less than 1 use negative powers. Count how many places you move the decimal point to determine the power.
Exam Strategy: Show your working clearly for standard form calculations - examiners often give marks for the method even if your final answer isn't perfect.
The final section tests standard form calculations. When multiplying, add the powers together. When dividing, subtract the powers. Always check your answer makes sense - if you're dividing a big number by a small one, expect a large result!
