Energy Stores and Systems
Think of energy stores as different "containers" where energy can be kept. There are loads of different types, but they all fall into two main categories that make everything much simpler to understand.
Kinetic energy is all about movement - anything that's moving has it. Potential energy is stored energy that's waiting to be used, like energy stored in position or state. Every other type of energy fits into one of these two groups.
Here's something that trips up loads of students: light, sound, and electricity aren't actually energy stores themselves. They're just ways that energy gets transferred from one place to another - think of them as energy delivery systems!
A system is just a fancy word for an object or group of objects working together. When something changes in a system, energy gets transferred between different stores. In a closed system, no energy can escape - the total amount stays exactly the same.
Quick tip: Remember that energy never disappears - it just moves around and changes form!
Energy Transfer Methods
Energy transfers happen in several key ways, and understanding these will help you tackle any physics problem involving energy.
Transfer by heating is probably the most familiar - like when you boil water in a kettle. The electrical energy gets converted to thermal energy in the heating element, which then heats up the water. Some energy always gets "wasted" as heat to the surroundings or sound.
Transfer by doing work happens when forces move objects or when electrical current flows. When you throw a ball upwards, your muscles' chemical energy becomes the ball's kinetic energy, then gravitational potential energy as it rises.
The work done equation is dead simple but incredibly useful: W = F × s. This means work done (in Joules) equals force (in Newtons) times distance moved (in metres). Remember, the distance has to be in the same direction as the force!
Exam tip: Energy transfer diagrams are common in exams - always show what type of energy you start with, what it becomes, and what gets "wasted" along the way.
