Stem Cells: The Body's Master Cells

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can multiply to produce more undifferentiated cells and develop into different cell types based on the instructions they receive. Early human embryos contain the most versatile stem cells, while adults have more limited stem cells in specific locations like bone marrow.

Both embryonic and adult stem cells can be grown in laboratories to produce clones (genetically identical cells) and differentiated into specialised cells for medical treatments. Adult stem cells are already being used in medicine - for example, bone marrow transplants help patients with blood diseases by providing stem cells that can develop into new blood cells to replace faulty ones.

Embryonic stem cells hold even more promise for future medical treatments. Through therapeutic cloning, embryos could be created with the same genetic information as a patient, producing stem cells that wouldn't be rejected by the patient's body when used to replace faulty cells. However, this approach involves risks like potential viral contamination and significant ethical debates.

Did you know? Plants have stem cells too! They're found in the meristems and can differentiate into any type of plant cell throughout the plant's life. These plant stem cells help produce clones of plants with desirable features for farming or help preserve rare plant species.

The ethical debate around stem cells centres on whether human embryos should be used for research since each represents a potential human life. Others argue that relieving the suffering of existing patients takes priority over embryonic rights. This demonstrates how scientific advances often raise complex questions that go beyond just the biology.
