Crude Oil and Alkanes
Crude oil is basically ancient plankton that's been squashed underground for millions of years - pretty gross but incredibly useful! It's a finite resource, which means once it's gone, it's gone forever.
The magic of crude oil lies in its hydrocarbons - molecules made only of carbon and hydrogen atoms. Think of them like different-sized LEGO chains: small chains flow easily and catch fire quickly (great for petrol), whilst long chains are thick and sticky (better for making plastics).
Alkanes are the most common hydrocarbons in crude oil, and they're called saturated because all their carbon atoms are properly "filled up" with four bonds each. The four smallest ones you need to know are methane (CH₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈), and butane (C₄H₁₀).
Quick Tip: Remember that longer hydrocarbon chains = higher boiling points, more viscous (thicker), and less flammable. This pattern affects everything else you'll learn about crude oil!

Fractional Distillation and Cracking
Fractional distillation is like sorting sweets by size, except we use heat instead of our hands. Crude oil gets heated until it becomes vapour, then different-sized hydrocarbons condense at different temperatures as they rise up a tall column.
The clever bit is that short-chain hydrocarbons (few carbon atoms) have low boiling points, so they travel to the cooler top of the column. Long-chain hydrocarbons get too heavy and condense at the hot bottom. This gives us separate "fractions" that can be turned into petrol, diesel, and other useful products.
Sometimes we need more small molecules than nature provides, so we use cracking - basically chopping up long hydrocarbon chains into shorter, more useful bits. This thermal decomposition can be done with hot catalysts or steam, and it produces both alkanes and alkenes (which have double bonds and are super useful for making plastics).
Combustion of hydrocarbons normally produces carbon dioxide and water, but if there's not enough oxygen around, you get poisonous carbon monoxide instead - definitely something to avoid!
Remember: Cracking turns less useful long chains into more valuable short chains. It's like turning one long rope into several shorter, more useful pieces!
