Understanding Crime in Society
Crime is straightforward - it's any illegal act that the government can punish you for. Think of it as behaviour that's so unacceptable that society has made laws against it. Anyone can commit a crime, whether they mean to or not.
There are loads of different types of crime you'll recognise from news stories and films. Crimes against the person include things like assault, whilst crimes against property cover theft, fraud, and vandalism. You've also got financial crimes (the fancy stuff like embezzlement), cybercrimes (online fraud and hacking), and even green crimes against the environment.
The key thing to remember is that crimes happen in the public sphere - meaning they affect society as a whole, not just individuals. That's why public authorities get involved and why there are official punishments like fines or prison time.
Quick Tip: If there's a specific law against it with official punishments, it's a crime. If it's just frowned upon, it's probably deviance!
What Makes Behaviour Deviant?
Deviance is about straying from what's considered normal or acceptable in society. Unlike crime, deviant behaviour doesn't necessarily break any laws - it just goes against social norms and expectations.
Picture a group playing loud music and drinking in a public park. They might not be breaking any laws, but many people would see this as anti-social behaviour because it goes against accepted social norms. That's deviance in action.
Here's the crucial bit: all crimes are deviances, but not all deviances are crimes. Crime is like deviance's more serious cousin that's crossed the line into illegal territory. What makes this tricky is that deviance depends on context - what's deviant in one culture or situation might be perfectly normal in another.
The context-dependency of deviance means that social, cultural, moral, and historical factors all influence what we consider deviant. What your grandparents' generation saw as shocking might seem completely normal to you today.
Remember: Deviance is subjective - it changes based on who's judging and when they're making that judgement!
