Core Islamic Beliefs and Practices

Your journey into understanding Islam starts with recognising it as a religion of submission to peace, where followers called Muslims worship Allah (the Arabic word for God). The most significant moment in Islamic history was the Night of Power, when the Qur'an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad - Muslims consider this night more valuable than a thousand months!

The Five Pillars of Islam form the absolute foundation of Muslim life that every believer must follow. These include the Shahadah (declaring faith in one God and Muhammad as his messenger), Salah (praying five times daily), Zakat (giving 2.5% of spare income to charity), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and Hajj (making a pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime).

Muslims describe Allah through 99 beautiful names found in the Qur'an, such as Al-Rahman (the Compassionate) and Al-Adl (the Just). Drawing images of Allah is considered shirk (a serious sin) because Allah is beyond human understanding, so Muslims use words instead of pictures to describe their God.

Remember: The Kaaba in Mecca is the black cube-shaped building that Muslims face when they pray, making it the spiritual centre of the Islamic world.

Understanding the difference between halal (permitted) and haram (forbidden) actions helps Muslims navigate daily life. The Ummah (worldwide Muslim community) celebrates together during Eid ul-Fitr (end of Ramadan) and Eid ul-Adha (commemorating Ibrahim's sacrifice), whilst Imams lead prayers at the mosque every Friday.

The concept of Tawhid - Allah's absolute oneness - underpins everything Muslims believe. Whether following the Six Articles of Faith (Sunni tradition) or the Five Roots of Usul ad-Din (Shi'a tradition), all Muslims share core beliefs about Allah's supremacy, the importance of prophets, holy books, angels, and the Day of Judgement when all humanity will face Allah's divine justice.
