Ever wondered how your phone charger, light bulbs, and home... Show more

filament lamp
The filament lamp is a common type of light bulb. It contains a thin
coil of wire called the filament. This

Electrical Components and Their Behaviour

Filament lamps are the traditional light bulbs you'll find in many homes. They work by heating up a thin wire coil (the filament) until it glows and produces light. Here's the interesting bit - they don't follow Ohm's Law because their resistance increases as they get hotter.

Diodes are like electrical one-way streets - they only let current flow in one direction. When voltage is applied the right way (forward bias), current flows freely. Apply it backwards (reverse bias), and nothing happens until you reach a specific voltage threshold.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) work similarly to regular diodes but give off light when current passes through them. You'll see these everywhere - from your TV's standby light to computer indicators.

Quick Tip: Remember that diodes are directional - they have a specific way they need to be connected to work properly!

Power in Electrical Circuits

When electrons flow through wires, they bump into atoms and create heat - that's why your phone charger gets warm. This energy transfer can be calculated using P = I × V (power equals current times voltage).

Power is measured in watts (W), and one watt equals one joule per second. This tells you how much energy a device uses every second it's running.

There's another useful formula: P = I² × R. This is particularly handy when you know the current and resistance but not the voltage.

Energy transfer is calculated using E = P × T (energy equals power times time). This is how your electricity bill is worked out - the longer you leave that gaming console on, the more energy (and money) you're using!

Current Types and Mains Supply

Your home uses alternating current (AC) at 230V, which changes direction 50 times per second (50Hz). Meanwhile, your phone battery supplies direct current (DC), which always flows in the same direction.

A cathode ray oscilloscope (CRO) can show you these differences visually - AC appears as a wave, whilst DC shows as a straight line.

UK homes use a three-wire system: the brown live wire carries current at high voltage, the blue neutral wire completes the circuit at low voltage, and the green/yellow earth wire provides safety protection.

Ring main circuits connect all your power sockets in a loop back to the consumer unit. This parallel arrangement means each socket gets the full 230V, and you can use appliances independently without affecting others.

Electrical Safety Systems

Fuses are your electrical safety net - they contain a thin wire that melts if too much current flows, breaking the circuit before damage occurs. Common ratings are 3A, 5A, and 13A.

To choose the right fuse, use I = P ÷ V to calculate the current your device needs, then pick the next highest standard rating. For example, if your device needs 10A, use a 13A fuse.

Circuit breakers work similarly to fuses but can be reset rather than replaced. Both protect your wiring and appliances from dangerous current surges.

Safety First: Always ensure fuses and circuit breakers are rated slightly higher than your device's normal operating current - too low and they'll trip during normal use!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
