Essay Structure and Mark Scheme
Your 20-mark essay breaks down into 8 knowledge marks, 6 analysis marks, 4 evaluation marks, and 2 synoptic marks. Think of it as showing off everything you know whilst building a convincing argument.
You'll need 5 or 6 clear sections: an introduction, 3-4 PEEAPEEAL paragraphs, and a strong conclusion. The key is maintaining an overall line of argument that directly answers the specific question you're tackling.
Your introduction should be concise—just 2-3 sentences max. Start with context about why the topic matters, then clearly state your overall argument , and finally mention the 3-4 factors you'll discuss in your main paragraphs.
Top Tip: Your introduction sets up your entire essay structure but won't earn marks on its own—keep it focused and move quickly to your main arguments.
Conclusion and Critical Skills
Your conclusion is where you can pick up extra marks by repeating your overall line of argument and explaining how your essay supports it. This isn't just summary—you can introduce new evidence, evaluate which factors matter most, or discuss real-world consequences.
Analysis is about making connections and exploring consequences. Ask yourself: what's the impact? How does this connect to other factors? What makes this different from other aspects? How could you support or challenge this viewpoint?
Evaluation takes your thinking further by weighing up importance and effectiveness. Consider how significant each factor really is, how well systems actually work in practice, and whether something is truly effective or ineffective.
Remember: Strong evaluation often comes from comparing factors and explaining why one matters more than another—this shows sophisticated thinking that examiners love to see.
