Responsibilities and Key Policies in HSC Settings
Every health and social care worker must follow strict policies and procedures that protect both clients and staff. Think of policies as the "what we do" rules, whilst procedures are the "how we do it" step-by-step instructions.
Essential policies you'll encounter include safeguarding (protecting vulnerable people from harm), health and safety, medication management, and complaints handling. There's also equality and diversity policies, DBS referral procedures, and protocols for serious situations like resident deaths.
Safeguarding is absolutely crucial - it means ensuring vulnerable children and adults are protected from harm, abuse, and neglect whilst promoting their health and wellbeing. This isn't just a policy; it's the foundation of everything you do in care.
Key Point: Policies aren't just paperwork - they're your roadmap for providing safe, effective care and protecting yourself professionally.
Professional Support and Specialist Agencies
You'll work alongside various healthcare professionals including GPs, nurses, consultants, dieticians, occupational therapists, and support workers. Youth workers specifically support people aged 11-25, whilst caregivers provide daily assistance.
