Healthcare Services and Sectors
Primary healthcare is your first port of call - think of your local GP surgery where you go for everyday health problems like flu or minor injuries. When your GP can't handle something, you'll move up to secondary healthcare, which is specialised care usually delivered in hospitals, like cardiology departments.
For the most complex cases, tertiary healthcare steps in with highly specialised staff and facilities for things like organ transplants and treating rare illnesses. Beyond the NHS, the voluntary sector includes charities like NSPCC and Age UK that focus on specific groups with particular health conditions.
Hospice care provides end-of-life support, helping with pain management and ensuring people are as comfortable as possible through holistic services. Meanwhile, domiciliary care brings support directly to people's homes, with care assistants helping with personal care and daily living whilst promoting independence.
Quick tip: Remember the hierarchy - primary (GP) → secondary (hospital specialists) → tertiary (highly specialised treatment). Each level handles increasingly complex health needs.
Accessing Care and Support
Getting the right care often starts with an assessment - local authorities must carry out community care assessments for anyone struggling to look after themselves. These assessments determine whether you're eligible for support and can even assess if carers need help with things like transport costs.
You can access services through self-referral (referring yourself for care), professional referral (when a healthcare professional directs you to another service), or third-party referral (when family refers you to support). However, various barriers can make accessing care difficult, including financial constraints, geographical location, and cultural preferences.
To receive support from local authorities, you must meet national eligibility criteria: having a mental or physical impairment/illness and being unable to do at least two daily activities like toileting, dressing, or preparing food safely. Regulatory bodies like Ofsted, CQC, and NICE ensure services meet quality standards and provide evidence-based care.
