Professional Standards and Monitoring Bodies
Ever wondered who makes sure healthcare professionals do their jobs properly? Three main bodies keep an eye on different types of care workers to maintain professional standards.
The General Medical Council (GMC) monitors doctors and consultants, whilst the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) oversees social workers, therapists, and physiotherapists. Meanwhile, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) keeps tabs on nurses, midwives, and nursing associates.
These organisations enforce codes of practice - basically the rules that set out how professionals should behave and work. Breaking these standards can seriously damage a career, so they're taken very seriously in healthcare settings.
Quick Tip: Remember GMC = doctors, HCPC = therapists/social workers, NMC = nurses. Each group has different skills but follows the same core values.
Anti-Discriminatory Practice and Legal Protection
Nobody should face unfair treatment when they need care, which is why anti-discriminatory practice is absolutely crucial in healthcare settings. This means challenging prejudice (those unfair opinions about groups of people) and ensuring everyone gets the care they need.
Two major laws protect people's rights: the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998.
