Healthcare Sectors and Levels of Care

Private sectors are all about making profit - you'll only get access if you pay through private policies or individually. Think expensive private hospitals where you skip NHS queues if you've got the cash.

The public sector is your familiar NHS, funded by taxes and national insurance that everyone pays. It's available to everyone regardless of how much money you have - that's why you don't pay when you visit your GP or end up in A&E.

Voluntary sectors sit somewhere in the middle, often run by faith groups or community organisations. They do make some profit but focus on doing the "right thing" for people. You'll find a mix of paid staff and volunteers working together.

Healthcare is also organised into three levels of care. Primary care is your first point of contact - GPs, A&E, and pharmacies. Secondary care handles referrals and planned treatments, like when A&E sends you to a hospital ward. Tertiary care provides long-term or highly specialised treatment that both primary and secondary care can refer you to.

Quick tip: Emergency Medical Technicians count as primary healthcare because they're often your very first contact with medical services during an emergency!
