Working with Surds - Multiplication and Simplification
You can multiply and divide surds just like regular numbers - the key is remembering that √2 × √2 = √4 = 2. When you multiply surds with the same root, you're essentially squaring them.
Simplifying surds means looking for square numbers hiding inside them. For √50, you need to spot that 50 = 25 × 2, so √50 = √25 × √2 = 5√2. Always check if you can pull out any perfect squares to make your answer neater.
When expanding brackets with surds, use the same "four rockets" method you'd use with algebra. For (√3 + 2)(√3 + 4), you get four terms: √3 × √3 = 3, √3 × 4 = 4√3, 2 × √3 = 2√3, and 2 × 4 = 8. Collect like terms to get 11 + 6√3.
Quick Tip: Always look for square numbers you can factor out - it's the fastest way to simplify surds!
Rationalising the Denominator
Rationalising the denominator means getting rid of any surds from the bottom of a fraction - examiners love this technique! For simple cases like 10/√2, multiply both top and bottom by √2 to get 10√2/2 = 5√2.
Things get trickier with two terms on the bottom, like 12/(√2+1). You need to multiply by the conjugate - that's the same expression but with the opposite sign, so (√2-1). This clever trick eliminates the surds completely.
When you expand (√2+1)(√2-1), the middle terms cancel out perfectly: you get 2 - √2 + √2 - 1 = 1. The √2 terms disappear, leaving you with a rational denominator. Your final answer becomes 12√2 - 12.
Remember: For single surds, multiply by the same surd. For two terms, change the sign and multiply!
