Essential Thai Greetings and Politeness

The most important thing to remember in Thai is politeness markers - these little words show respect and make all the difference. Men add "krub" at the end of sentences, whilst women use "kha". Think of them like saying "please" or "sir/madam" in English.

"Sa-wad-dee" is your go-to greeting for any time of day - morning, afternoon, or evening. So you'd say "Sa-wad-dee kha" if you're female or "Sa-wad-dee krub" if you're male. Simple!

When you want to ask how someone is, use "Sabaai-dee-mai" for formal situations (like with teachers or adults). With mates, switch to "Pben-ngai-bang" - it's basically "what's up?" Remember to add your politeness marker at the end.

Top Tip: Always say "khob-khun" (thank you) with your politeness marker - Thai people really appreciate good manners!

Useful Everyday Phrases

Here's the magic phrase that'll save you constantly: "Mai-pben-rai" means "it's fine," "you're welcome," and "it's okay" all rolled into one. Use it when someone thanks you or apologises - it's like the Swiss Army knife of Thai phrases!

Food talk is essential when you're in Thailand. "Hiu-khao" means you're hungry (literally "want rice"), and "hiu-nam" means you're thirsty. When something tastes amazing, say "aroi" for delicious, or go all out with "aroi jing-jing" for "really delicious!"

Not a fan of spicy food? You'll need "mai-ao-pet" (not spicy please) when ordering. If you absolutely can't handle any heat at all, use "mai-sai-prik" (don't put chillies at all).

Remember: "Pbai-laew-na" is your polite way to say "I've got to go" - much better than just disappearing mid-conversation!
