Stave 1: The Miser and the Warning
Meet Ebenezer Scrooge - quite possibly the grumpiest person you'll ever encounter in literature! Right from the start, Dickens makes it clear that Scrooge's business partner Marley is dead (and has been for seven years), setting up the supernatural elements that will drive the entire story.
Scrooge's cold-hearted nature becomes obvious when his cheerful nephew Fred pops round to invite him for Christmas dinner. Does Scrooge accept this lovely gesture? Absolutely not! He rudely rejects Fred's offer, showing just how isolated he's made himself from family and joy.
Things get even worse when charity workers arrive asking for donations to help the poor during Christmas. Scrooge's infamous response - "Are there no prisons?" - reveals his complete lack of compassion for those less fortunate. It's clear that very few people actually like this man!
The supernatural drama kicks off when Scrooge heads home and spots Marley's face on his door knocker. Things get properly spooky when Marley's ghost appears, wrapped in heavy chains as punishment for his greedy life. Marley warns Scrooge that three spirits will visit him - and if he doesn't learn from them, he'll end up suffering the same chained fate!
Remember: Stave 1 establishes Scrooge as completely unlikeable whilst setting up the supernatural framework that will drive his transformation throughout the novella.
