Guilt, Gender Roles and Reality vs Appearance
The psychological horror in Macbeth comes from guilt and paranoia eating away at the characters' minds. Sleep becomes impossible for Macbeth after Duncan's murder – "Macbeth shall sleep no more" – symbolising how conscience refuses to let him rest. His mind becomes "full of scorpions," showing the mental torment that follows immoral actions.
Shakespeare brilliantly subverts traditional gender roles to create drama and tension. Lady Macbeth takes on the traditionally masculine role of aggressor, whilst Macbeth initially shows more feminine qualities like doubt and emotional sensitivity. However, by the end, these roles flip back as Lady Macbeth succumbs to guilt whilst Macbeth hardens into a ruthless killer.
The theme of appearance versus reality runs throughout the play like a dark thread.
