Oxidation and reduction a level

Ever wondered why your phone battery runs down or how... Show more

Here's the golden rule that'll save you in exams: oxidation is loss of electrons, reduction is gain of electrons. Think "OIL RIG" - it's cheesy but it works! When sodium meets chlorine to make table salt, sodium loses an electron (gets oxidised) whilst chlorine gains that electron (gets reduced).
The tricky bit? The oxidising agent actually gets reduced itself, and the reducing agent gets oxidised. It's like being a matchmaker - you help others find love but end up changing yourself in the process.
Oxidation states tell you how many electrons an atom has donated or accepted. For uncombined elements and diatomic molecules like O₂, the oxidation state is always zero - they're perfectly balanced.
Quick Tip: Group 1 metals always have +1, Group 2 always have +2, and fluorine is always -1. Learn these patterns and you'll spot oxidation states instantly!

Oxygen usually has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides (like hydrogen peroxide) where it's -1. Hydrogen is typically +1, but in metal hydrides like sodium hydride, it flips to -1.
For polyatomic ions, the oxidation states must add up to the ion's charge. Take sulfate (SO₄²⁻) - sulfur has +6 and each oxygen has -2, giving you 6 + (4 × -2) = -2 overall.
Electronegativity is your secret weapon here. The most electronegative element (the electron hog) gets the negative oxidation state. In compounds like ammonia (NH₃), nitrogen is more electronegative than hydrogen, so nitrogen gets -3.
Those Roman numerals in chemical names? They're telling you the oxidation state directly. Copper(II) oxide means copper has an oxidation state of +2 - it's like a chemical cheat code!
Exam Hack: When calculating oxidation states, set up simple equations. The unknown oxidation state plus all the known ones must equal the overall charge. Maths saves the day again!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
