Cell Structure and Specialised Cells
Ever wondered what makes you different from a plant or a bacterium? It all comes down to cell structure. Animal cells (like yours) have a nucleus that acts like the cell's control centre, plus mitochondria that work as tiny power stations providing energy.
Plant cells are similar but have some cool extras - chloroplasts for photosynthesis, a tough cell wall for support, and a large permanent vacuole for storage. Bacterial cells are the odd ones out - they're much simpler with no nucleus, just a DNA loop floating freely inside.
Specialised cells are like cellular superheroes, each designed for specific jobs. Sperm cells have long tails for swimming and loads of mitochondria for energy. Nerve cells stretch incredibly long distances to carry electrical messages around your body. Root hair cells have extensions that increase surface area for absorbing water and minerals.
Quick Tip: Remember that structure always relates to function - if a cell has lots of mitochondria, it needs lots of energy for its job!
Cell Division, Stem Cells, and Transport
Your body contains trillions of cells, and they all started from just one! Mitosis is the process where cells divide to create two identical copies. During the cell cycle, chromosomes double up, then get pulled apart to opposite ends before the whole cell splits in two.
Stem cells are the ultimate shape-shifters of biology. Embryonic stem cells can become almost any type of cell, whilst adult stem cells are more limited. Plants have meristem cells that can develop into any plant tissue. These cells offer exciting medical possibilities but raise ethical questions too.
Transport across membranes keeps cells alive by moving essential materials. Diffusion happens naturally when particles spread from high to low concentration - like oxygen entering your blood. Osmosis is just water diffusion through membranes. Active transport is different because it moves substances against the concentration gradient using energy.
Exam Focus: The magnification formula is crucial: Magnification = size of image ÷ size of real object. Practice this calculation!
