Parts of a Microscope
Learning to identify microscope components is like getting to know the controls of a powerful tool that can magnify objects up to 1000 times! Each part has a specific job that helps you see the invisible world around you.
The lens system includes the eyepiece (where you look through) and multiple objectives mounted on a revolving nosepiece. Different objectives give you various magnification powers - typically 4x, 10x, and 40x. Simply rotate the nosepiece to switch between them.
The focusing mechanisms are crucial for getting sharp images. The coarse focusing mechanism makes big adjustments to bring your specimen roughly into focus, whilst the fine focusing mechanism gives you precise control for crystal-clear viewing.
The mechanical stage holds your slide steady and lets you move it around smoothly using small knobs. Below this, the substage contains the mirror (or light source) that illuminates your specimen from underneath.
Top Tip: Always start with the lowest magnification objective and work your way up - it's much easier to find your specimen this way!
