Blood Vessels and Their Functions

Think of your blood vessels as a three-part delivery system that keeps you alive 24/7. Arteries are the motorways that carry blood away from your heart at high speed. Capillaries are the tiny local roads where all the important exchanges happen. Veins are the return routes that bring blood back to your heart.

Arteries are built like reinforced tunnels because they handle serious pressure. When your heart pumps, it creates massive force, so artery walls are thick and strong with elastic fibres and smooth muscle. These elastic fibres work like springs - they stretch when blood surges through, then snap back to keep the flow moving.

The walls of arteries are thick compared to their lumen (the space inside). Arteries branch into smaller vessels called arterioles, which then connect to capillaries.

Quick Tip: Remember "A for Away" - arteries carry blood away from the heart!

Capillaries and Veins

Capillaries are the superstars of your circulatory system, even though they're so tiny you can't see them without a microscope. Their walls are just one cell thick, making them perfect for diffusion - the process that delivers oxygen and food to your cells whilst removing waste like CO2.

These microscopic vessels have permeable walls that act like selective barriers. Think of them as biological checkpoints where the good stuff (oxygen, nutrients) gets delivered and the rubbish (carbon dioxide, waste) gets collected.

Veins are the chill cousins of arteries. Since blood pressure drops significantly by the time it reaches veins, their walls don't need to be as thick. Instead, they have a large lumen to help blood flow despite the lower pressure. The clever bit? Veins have valves that work like one-way gates, preventing blood from flowing backwards.

Memory Trick: Veins have valves because blood moves more slowly and needs help getting back to the heart!
