Temperature and Enzyme Activity
Think of enzymes like matchmakers at a party - the warmer it gets, the more active everyone becomes! Increasing temperature speeds up molecular movement, causing more collisions between enzymes and their substrates. This typically doubles the reaction rate for every 10°C temperature rise.
But here's the catch: too much heat ruins the party completely. When temperatures get too high, the enzyme structure breaks down through a process called denaturation. The protein's shape changes permanently, and the active site no longer fits its substrate - like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
Human enzymes work best around 40°C, which is why your body temperature is so tightly controlled. Interestingly, polar bear enzymes function perfectly at 5°C, whilst some bacterial enzymes thrive at a scorching 70°C!

Substrate and enzyme concentration work like supply and demand. More substrate means more collisions and faster reactions - until you hit a ceiling. Once all active sites are occupied, adding more substrate won't help. Similarly, more enzymes mean more available active sites, boosting reaction rates until the system maxes out.
Remember: Each enzyme is perfectly designed for its specific job location in your body - from breaking down starch in your mouth to digesting proteins in your stomach!
