Nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA, each composed of three essential components: a pentose sugar , a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. These components join together through condensation reactions to form a single nucleotide (mononucleotide).
The magic happens when nucleotides link together. When two mononucleotides join via a condensation reaction, they form a phosphodiester bond between the deoxyribose sugar of one nucleotide and the phosphate group of another. This creates a structure called a dinucleotide.
As more mononucleotides link together through the same process, they form longer chains called polynucleotides. These chains become the backbone of DNA molecules that store your genetic information.
