Cardiovascular Disease Basics
Ever wondered what actually happens during a heart attack? It's simpler than you might think. A heart attack (also called myocardial infarction) occurs when your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen, usually because something's blocking the coronary arteries that supply blood to your heart.
Strokes work similarly but affect your brain instead. When brain tissue can't get oxygen, it gets damaged or dies, leading to the serious effects we associate with strokes.
Here's the thing that might surprise you - both conditions often stem from the same underlying problem called atherosclerosis. This is basically your arteries getting clogged up with fatty deposits over many years, like how pipes get blocked with limescale.
Key Insight: Heart attacks and strokes are essentially the same process happening in different parts of your body - oxygen starvation due to blocked arteries.
How Atherosclerosis Develops
Think of atherosclerosis as a slow-motion disaster that unfolds over decades in your arteries. It starts innocently enough but becomes a serious problem through a vicious cycle.
The process kicks off when the endothelial (inner wall) of an artery gets damaged, often from high blood pressure constantly battering the walls. Your body's immune system responds by sending white blood cells to help, but these cells end up making things worse by accumulating fat and cholesterol, forming what's called an atheroma.
Over time, calcium salts create a rough, fibrous cap over this fatty deposit, making your artery walls bumpy and narrow. Here's where it gets nasty - this damage creates a positive feedback loop, meaning the problem accelerates and gets exponentially worse over time.
Remember: Atherosclerosis is like compound interest but for your arteries - small problems early on become massive issues later if left unchecked.
