Biodiversity- variety of living organisms in an area. High biodiversity means there are lots of different species.
Habitat

Understanding Biodiversity and Conservation

Think of biodiversity as nature's insurance policy - the more variety we have, the more resilient our ecosystems become. You'll need to understand three key levels: habitat diversity (different environments in an area), species diversity (both the number of species and how evenly distributed they are), and genetic diversity (variation within species).

Species richness simply counts how many different species live in an area, whilst species evenness measures whether population sizes are similar across species. Genetic diversity matters because populations with limited genetic variation struggle to adapt to environmental changes - think of captive breeding programmes where isolated populations become vulnerable.

Simpson's Index of Diversity combines both richness and evenness into one useful calculation: D = N $N-1$ /Σn $n-1$ . Values closer to 1 indicate more diverse habitats, making this formula essential for your exams.

Quick Tip: Remember that genetic polymorphism occurs when a gene has multiple versions (alleles) at the same location - this variation keeps populations healthy and adaptable.

Maintaining biodiversity isn't just about being environmentally conscious. Protecting keystone species (like predators that control prey populations) prevents ecosystem collapse, whilst preserving genetic resources gives us future medicines, materials, and food security.
