Bacteria and Pathogens
Ever wondered how something so small can make you ill? Bacteria are the most common type of micro-organisms on Earth, and they're incredibly simple yet powerful. These tiny creatures are made of just one cell, but don't let their size fool you - they can multiply incredibly quickly when conditions are right.
What makes bacteria so successful is their ability to split again and again to create more of themselves. This process happens much faster than you might think! When food, water, and the right temperature are available, bacteria can double their numbers in just 20 minutes.
Some bacteria are proper survivors too. When things get tough - like when it's too hot, cold, or dry - certain types can create spores. These spores are like protective shells that help bacteria survive for thousands of years until conditions improve again.
Bacteria come in thousands of different shapes and sizes, each with unique characteristics and lots of DNA strands that control how they behave. Take cholera bacteria, for example - this nasty pathogen causes a serious infection that unfortunately can't be prevented by vaccination, which is why cholera is still common in some parts of the world.
Quick Fact: Bacteria are so small that millions could fit on the head of a pin, yet they're found in every environment on Earth - from deep ocean trenches to your own gut!
