Cell Theory and Microscopy Fundamentals
Cell theory is one of biology's most important principles - it tells us that cells are life's building blocks and that every living thing, from bacteria to humans, is made of cells. What's brilliant about this theory is that it explains how new life forms: cells only come from other cells dividing, never from nothing.
The key difference you need to know is between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells (found in plants and animals) are complex with a nucleus and specialised compartments called organelles. Prokaryotic cells are much simpler single-celled organisms like bacteria - no nucleus, no fancy organelles, just the basics for survival.
Light microscopes use visible light to magnify specimens up to 500 times, perfect for observing cell structures. They're limited by resolution (can only distinguish objects 200nm apart), but they're brilliant for studying living cells without destroying them.
Electron microscopes are the powerhouses of cell biology, using electron beams to achieve incredible magnification (50,000x) and resolution (0.1nm). The trade-off? They destroy samples in the process, so you can't observe living cells.
Quick Tip: Remember the magnification formula: Actual size = Image size ÷ Magnification - this calculation appears frequently in exams!
Epithelial Tissues and Their Functions
Epithelial tissues are your body's protective and functional linings, found covering organs and surfaces throughout your body. These specialised tissues have evolved specific shapes and features to do very different jobs.
Squamous epithelial tissue consists of flat, thin cells arranged in smooth layers - think of them like biological cling film. They're found in your lung alveoli where their thinness allows rapid oxygen diffusion into your bloodstream. However, smoking severely damages this tissue, causing inflammation, scarring, and thickening that leads to emphysema and reduced lung elasticity.
Ciliated columnar epithelial tissue lines your trachea and features column-shaped cells covered in tiny hair-like structures called cilia. These cells work like biological sweepers, constantly moving to clear pathogens and debris from your respiratory system whilst secreting mucus to trap harmful particles before they reach your lungs.
Endothelial tissue forms the smooth inner lining of your heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. These cells create short diffusion pathways that allow efficient movement of substances - from nutrients entering blood capillaries to blood plasma moving in and out of tissues.
Remember: Each epithelial tissue type has evolved its specific shape and features to match its function perfectly - thin for diffusion, ciliated for cleaning, smooth for fluid flow.
