The theory is built on consensus - the idea that we all generally agree on basic values, rules, and goals. Without this shared understanding, functionalists argue, society would descend into complete chaos. It's like everyone in your school agreeing that turning up to lessons and following basic rules makes the whole system work.
Key pioneers Emile Durkheim and Talcott Parsons developed these ideas during times of massive social change. Durkheim was particularly worried about industrialisation breaking down traditional communities and leaving people isolated.

This shift was massive for how we think about government and society. Previously, kings and states were seen as enforcing God's will. After the Enlightenment, people began viewing government as a practical arrangement to protect everyone's natural rights and interests.
Durkheim was fascinated by how industrialisation was changing society. He noticed that industrial countries like England had three times more suicides than less industrialised places like Italy. His explanation? Industrial capitalism made people more individualistic, breaking down the consensus on norms and values that held communities together.
Traditional institutions like the Church were losing their grip, but nothing was replacing them. Durkheim wanted to create a science of society to figure out how modern societies could stay harmonious and orderly.
Key Insight: The Enlightenment didn't just change science - it completely transformed how we think about society, government, and human relationships.
Parsons' Organic Analogy and Society's Needs
Talcott Parsons created one of functionalism's most famous concepts: the organic analogy. Just as your heart, lungs, and brain all depend on each other to keep you alive, different parts of society must work together to keep the whole system functioning.
Parsons identified four basic needs that every society must meet to survive, known as functional prerequisites. Goal attainment means society must set and achieve objectives - like governments reducing poverty through new policies. Adaptation involves adjusting to change, such as businesses cutting costs during recessions.
Integration ensures all institutions work together harmoniously. Schools don't just teach maths and English; they also transmit shared values that help maintain social cohesion. Latency involves maintaining people's motivation through institutions like families, which instil cultural values in children.
Parsons believed socialisation was crucial for creating consensus. Through learning shared norms and values, plus social control mechanisms that discourage deviance, society maintains stability and peaceful cooperation.
