After World War II, Britain entered a new era known...
Introduction to Modern Britain: Chapter 1

Britain After the War
Britain might have won WWII, but victory came at a massive cost. The country was drowning in debt and needed serious rebuilding. In a shocking upset, wartime hero Winston Churchill lost the 1945 election to Clement Attlee's Labour Party.
Labour wasted no time transforming Britain. They created the welfare state and launched the NHS in 1948 - giving everyone healthcare from cradle to grave. They also nationalised key industries like coal, electricity, and gas, plus the Bank of England.
By 1951, things got interesting. Labour actually won more votes but still lost the election, bringing Churchill back to power. This marked the beginning of 13 years of Conservative rule during Britain's post-war boom.
Remember: This period shows how war victory doesn't guarantee political success - voters wanted change, not just celebration.

The Conservative Prime Ministers
Winston Churchill returned to power at 77, but age was catching up. After suffering a stroke in 1953, he spent more time travelling abroad than running Britain. Most day-to-day government work fell to Anthony Eden.
Anthony Eden had big shoes to fill as a long-serving foreign secretary. Initially popular, he quickly proved he lacked domestic experience and wasn't interested in home affairs. His reputation crashed completely after the disastrous Suez military action.
Harold Macmillan , nicknamed "Super Mac," presided over massive prosperity and the post-war boom. However, by 1961-63, he seemed completely out of touch. A series of scandals damaged his reputation, and poor health forced his resignation.
Sir Alec Douglas-Home became PM almost by accident when the obvious choice (Butler) faced too much opposition. Coming from the House of Lords, he made the Conservatives look outdated and was quickly defeated in 1964.
Key Point: This succession shows how personal failings and changing times can quickly topple even experienced politicians.

Conservative Achievements and Policies
The Conservatives delivered on their promise to build 300,000 houses per year, tackling bomb damage and replacing slums. They continued Labour's tripartite education system with grammar, technical, and secondary modern schools, though people began questioning its fairness by the 1960s.
Environmental and social reforms included the Clean Air Act 1956 to combat deadly smog that plagued cities in the 1950s. The Housing and Factory Act aimed to improve both living and working conditions for ordinary people.
The Conservatives maintained welfare spending and built 6,000 new schools whilst planning to double university places. They also opened the M1 motorway in 1959 - Britain's first motorway, symbolising the country's modernisation.
Quick Fact: The 300,000 houses per year target was actually achieved, showing the Conservatives could deliver on major promises.
