Louis Pasteur and the Revolution in Disease Understanding
Before Pasteur came along, most people believed in spontaneous generation theory - the bizarre idea that germs just magically appeared from rotting matter. Imagine thinking that maggots simply spawned from decaying meat rather than coming from fly eggs!
In 1861, Pasteur published his groundbreaking Germ Theory, which included four game-changing principles. Air contains living microorganisms that can be killed by heating, these microbes cause decay, and they're not spread evenly through the air. Sounds obvious now, but this was revolutionary stuff back then.
The breakthrough came when improved microscopes let Pasteur actually see the microbes that were ruining wine and vinegar. He proved that sterilised matter left alone didn't decay - something in the air was causing it. This led him to wonder: if microbes cause decay, might they also cause disease in humans?
Key Insight: Pasteur didn't publish his full germ theory of infection until 1878, showing how carefully he developed his ideas.
At first, British doctors weren't having it. Pasteur was "just" a scientist, not a medical doctor, so many trusted physicians stuck with the old spontaneous generation theory. However, influential figures like Dr Henry Bastan and John Tyndall began promoting the link between microbes and disease, eventually leading to major advances in surgery and treatment methods.
