Der Kalte Krieg und die Entstehung der NATO
Die Gründung der NATO am 4. April 1949 markierte einen Wendepunkt in der Nachkriegszeit. Die North Atlantic Treaty Organization wurde von den USA, Kanada und zehn europäischen Staaten ins Leben gerufen, um ein Gegengewicht zur wachsenden Macht der Sowjetunion zu bilden.
Definition: Die NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) ist ein politisch-militärisches Bündnis westlicher Staaten, das nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gegründet wurde.
Die Gründung der NATO erfolgte vor dem Hintergrund des sich abzeichnenden Kalten Krieges, in dem sich die USA und die Sowjetunion als bestimmende Weltmächte feindlich gegenüberstanden. Während die USA mit den demokratischen Staaten des Westens verbündet waren, führte die Sowjetunion den kommunistischen Ostblock an.
Highlight: Die NATO Gründung ermöglichte es, die Ausweitung des sowjetischen Einflusses auf Westdeutschland zu verhindern und den Kapitalismus weiter zu verbreiten.
Als Reaktion auf die NATO-Gründung und die Wiederbewaffnung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wurde am 14. Mai 1955 der Warschauer Pakt von den Ostblockstaaten unter Führung der Sowjetunion gegründet. Dieses Militärbündnis sollte ein Gegengewicht zur NATO schaffen und die Vormachtstellung der Sowjetunion in Mittel- und Osteuropa sichern.

Ein wichtiger Faktor in der Nachkriegszeit war der Marshall-Plan, der am 5. Juni 1947 von US-Außenminister George C. Marshall vorgestellt wurde. Dieses European Recovery Program zielte darauf ab, die europäische Wirtschaft anzukurbeln und den Kommunismus im Rahmen der Truman-Doktrin einzudämmen.
