Changing Spaces, Making Places: A Comprehensive Guide to OCR A... Show more
This page delves into the historical factors that have shaped Toxteth's development and current situation.
Toxteth's location on the west coast of England made it an ideal port for the slave trade in the 1800s. This dark period in history brought significant wealth to the area, leading to the construction of large Georgian houses and Victorian-era grand residences.
Quote: "Georgian Quarter = Rich slave merchants & Industrialists lived here."
The area's built environment reflects its prosperous past, with the 'Georgian Quarter' serving as a testament to the wealth generated during the slave trade and industrial era.
Several factors contributed to Liverpool's decline, including:
In response to these challenges, efforts have been made to rebrand the docks for tourism, such as the establishment of Tate Liverpool. The European Union has also provided structural investment to encourage economic growth in the area.
Definition: Containerization - A system of intermodal freight transport using standardized containers that can be loaded onto ships, trains, and trucks.
This section examines the current demographic, cultural, and socio-economic landscape of Lympstone, a village in Devon, England.
Lympstone presents a stark contrast to Toxteth in terms of its demographic composition. The village is ethnically homogenous, with 99% of the population being white. This lack of diversity is partly due to the decline in agricultural and skilled jobs in the 1960s and 1970s, which reduced opportunities for migrants.
Highlight: The demographic homogeneity of Lympstone reflects broader trends in rural England and presents a significant contrast to urban areas like Toxteth.
Culturally, Lympstone is predominantly Christian and Atheist, with the Parish Council playing a significant role in community life. The socio-economic situation in Lympstone is generally more favorable than the national average:
The village has benefited from shifts in the national economy towards service and quaternary sector growth. This is exemplified by the development of the Exeter Science Park in 2015, which created 3000 jobs in the knowledge economy.
Vocabulary: Quaternary sector - The knowledge-based part of the economy, which typically includes services such as information technology, research, and development.
Lympstone's natural characteristics, including its location on the bank of the River Exe and its tidal mudflats, have shaped its historical development as a trading port and fishing village.
This page explores the historical factors that have influenced Lympstone's development and current character.
Lympstone's past is closely tied to its natural characteristics, particularly its location on the River Exe. The village's tidal mudflats made it an ideal location for a trading port, which shaped its early economic development.
Key historical developments include:
Example: The arrival of the railway in 1861 had a significant impact on Lympstone. It allowed for easier commuting to Exeter and provided wider market access for the local shellfish industry.
The built environment of Lympstone reflects its history, with preserved cottages in the old center of the village and a wealthy suburb that developed on the edge of the village in the 1850s. This development was partly in response to the village's growing popularity as a dormitory settlement for Exeter.
Vocabulary: Dormitory settlement - A place from which many people travel to work in a nearby city.
The political structure of Lympstone is multi-layered:
This structure reflects the complex governance of rural areas in England and plays a crucial role in shaping the village's development and character.
This section introduces the fundamental concepts of place and space, which are crucial for understanding the OCR A Level Geography Changing Spaces, Making Places topic.
Space is defined as an area without meaning, while place is a space with meaning attached to it. The concept of place is made up of several key components:
Definition: Sense of place - The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a particular location.
The characteristics that make up a place include:
Understanding these components is essential for analyzing how places change over time and how they are perceived by different groups of people.
Highlight: The concept of place is multifaceted, encompassing both objective characteristics and subjective perceptions.
This page delves into the factors that influence how people perceive and relate to different places.
Perceptions of place are highly subjective and can vary significantly based on individual characteristics and experiences. Some key factors that affect perception include:
Example: The Castro district in San Francisco is often perceived differently by LGBTQ+ individuals compared to other groups due to its historical significance as a center for LGBTQ+ rights and culture.
Religious and cultural factors can play a significant role in shaping perceptions of place. For instance, Jerusalem holds deep spiritual meaning for followers of three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This shared significance has led to Jerusalem being a contested space for over 1500 years.
Quote: "Jerusalem has been destroyed and rebuilt five times in the last 1500 years."
Ethnic enclaves in cities, such as Chinatowns in various global metropolises, also demonstrate how cultural identity can shape the perception and character of a place.
Understanding these varied perceptions is crucial for geographers studying the complex relationships between people and places. It also highlights the potential for conflict and the need for sensitive urban planning and community engagement.
This section examines the complex geopolitical situation of the Kurdish people, providing a case study in the relationship between ethnicity, place, and national identity.
The Kurds are an ethnic group with an estimated population of 35 million, spread across the Middle East. Despite their significant numbers, the Kurds do not have a recognized nation-state. Instead, the area known as 'Kurdistan' is spread across parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey.
Vocabulary: Kurdistan - A roughly defined geo-cultural region wherein the Kurdish people form a prominent majority population and Kurdish culture, languages, and national identity have historically been based.
Key points about the Kurdish situation:
Highlight: The situation of the Kurdish people illustrates how ethnic identity can transcend national borders and how the concept of 'place' can be tied to a dispersed population rather than a single, defined territory.
This case study demonstrates the complex interplay between ethnicity, politics, and geography. It also highlights the challenges faced by stateless nations and the potential for conflict when ethnic identities do not align with established national borders.
Understanding the Kurdish situation is valuable for students of OCR A Level Geography as it provides a real-world example of how cultural and ethnic factors can shape perceptions of place and influence geopolitical dynamics.
This section explores the concept of globalization and its profound effects on the character and perception of places worldwide.
Globalization is defined as the process by which the world becomes more interconnected economically, politically, socially, and culturally. This interconnectedness has led to the concept of a 'global village', where distances between places seem to shrink due to improved communication and transportation technologies.
Definition: Global village - A term coined by Marshall McLuhan to describe how electronic mass media collapse space and time barriers in human communication, enabling people to interact and live on a global scale.
Key aspects of globalization:
Example: The presence of Starbucks cafes in cities around the world is a visible manifestation of globalization's impact on local landscapes and consumer cultures.
Advantages of globalization:
Disadvantages of globalization:
Highlight: While globalization has made the world more connected, it has also raised concerns about the preservation of local cultures and identities.
Understanding globalization is crucial for OCR A Level Geography students studying Changing Spaces, Making Places. It provides a framework for analyzing how global forces shape local places and how communities respond to these changes.
This page discusses the importance of formal statistics and data in geographical studies, particularly in the context of OCR A Level Geography Changing Spaces, Making Places.
Formal statistics and data play a crucial role in geographical research and analysis. They provide quantitative information that can be used to understand trends, make comparisons, and support or challenge theories about places and spatial phenomena.
Advantages of using formal statistics:
Example: Census data is a prime example of formal statistics used in geography. It provides comprehensive information about population demographics, housing, and socio-economic conditions, allowing for detailed analysis of how places change over time.
However, it's important to note that while formal statistics are valuable, they should be used in conjunction with other forms of data and research methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of places and spatial phenomena.
Highlight: The ability to interpret and analyze formal statistics is a key skill for OCR A Level Geography students, particularly when studying topics like changing spaces and making places.
Understanding how to use and interpret formal statistics is essential for students preparing for OCR A Level Geography - Changing Spaces, Making Places exam questions. It enables them to support their arguments with concrete evidence and to critically analyze geographical information presented in various formats.
This section examines the current demographic, cultural, and socio-economic landscape of Toxteth, an inner-city area of Liverpool.
Toxteth's demographic makeup reflects its history of immigration, with 78% of the population being white and 20% from other ethnic backgrounds. The area has a rich cultural diversity, evidenced by the presence of various religious institutions including mosques, churches, and prayer houses.
Highlight: Toxteth's long history of immigration, particularly after World War II, has significantly shaped its current demographic and cultural characteristics.
The built environment of Toxteth includes a mix of housing types, religious buildings, and community spaces. However, the area faces significant socio-economic challenges.
Example: Toxteth is considered one of the most deprived areas in the country, with less than 50% of residents owning a car, indicating limited disposable income.
The economic situation in Toxteth has been heavily influenced by the closure of Liverpool's ports and subsequent deindustrialization. This has led to high unemployment rates and limited access to private education.
Vocabulary: Deindustrialization - The reduction or removal of industrial activity in an area.
Toxteth's natural characteristics, including its location on the bank of the River Mersey and a stream running through the area, played a crucial role in its historical development as a port and industrial center.

This app has made me feel so much more confident in my exam prep, not only through boosting my own self confidence through the features that allow you to connect with others and feel less alone, but also through the way the app itself is centred around making you feel better. It is easy to navigate, fun to use, and helpful to anyone struggling in absolutely any way.

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
