Think of elements as the ultimate LEGO blocks of the universe โ they're pure substances that can't be broken down into anything simpler. Each element is made from just one type of atom, like oxygen, hydrogen, or iron.
What's fascinating is that some elements prefer to hang out alone as individual atoms, whilst others team up to form molecules. It's a bit like how some people are happy being solo whilst others always travel in groups.
Scientists use particle diagrams to show us what's happening at the atomic level. These simple drawings help you visualise whether atoms are packed tightly together (like in a solid), loosely arranged (in a liquid), or flying about freely (in a gas).
Quick Tip: Remember that all atoms in an element's particle diagram must be the same colour and size โ they're identical twins!

The periodic table is like a massive filing system containing all 118 known elements, arranged in a very clever order. You'll notice a zigzag line running through it โ this separates the metals (on the left and middle) from the non-metals (on the right).
Hydrogen is the odd one out, sitting alone at the top because its atomic structure doesn't fit the usual rules. It's also pretty explosive and makes a distinctive 'squeaky pop' sound when it burns โ handy for lab tests!
Helium is hydrogen's completely opposite neighbour. Whilst hydrogen loves to react with everything, helium is the ultimate loner that refuses to react with anything. That's why it's perfect for party balloons.
Did You Know: The first 94 elements occur naturally, but the super-heavy ones at the bottom are human-made using nuclear reactions!

Compounds form when two or more different elements decide to chemically bond together in fixed ratios. Think of it like a recipe โ water always needs exactly 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom, giving us the formula HโO.
Once elements bond to form a compound, they're stuck together pretty firmly. You can't just shake them apart โ you need serious chemical reactions like electrolysis or thermal decomposition to break them up.
Particle diagrams for compounds show different coloured atoms representing different elements. Water molecules always show two white hydrogen atoms bonded to one red oxygen atom, whilst carbon dioxide (COโ) shows one black carbon with two red oxygens.
Remember: Compounds don't appear on the periodic table because they're combinations of elements, not elements themselves!

Mixtures are the complete opposite of compounds โ they're like flatmates who live together but keep their own stuff separate. The substances aren't chemically bonded, so they can be mixed in any amounts you fancy.
The brilliant thing about mixtures is that you can separate them using simple physical processes. Want to separate sand from water? Just use filtration. Need to get salt out of water? Try crystallisation or distillation. Iron filings mixed with sulfur powder? A magnet sorts that right out.
In particle diagrams of mixtures, you'll see different atoms and molecules just hanging about near each other, not bonded together. Air is a perfect example โ it's mainly nitrogen and oxygen molecules having a casual mix.
Life Hack: If you can separate it without a chemical reaction, it's definitely a mixture, not a compound!
