Earth's Atmosphere: Then and Now

Your planet's atmosphere has completely transformed over billions of years! Today's air is mostly nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%), with tiny amounts of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and noble gases. But 4.6 billion years ago, it was a totally different story.

Early Earth's atmosphere was mainly carbon dioxide with hardly any oxygen - imagine trying to breathe on Mars or Venus today! Massive volcanic activity during the first billion years pumped out CO₂, water vapour, methane, and ammonia into the air.

As Earth cooled down, something amazing happened. The water vapour condensed and fell as rain, creating our oceans. This was the first step in transforming our planet from a volcanic wasteland into something that could support life.

Quick Fact: Early Earth's atmosphere had almost no oxygen - you definitely wouldn't survive without a spacesuit!

How Our Atmosphere Changed

The transformation from toxic to breathable air happened through several key processes that you can still observe today. Volcanic activity released the initial gases, but then nature took over to reshape everything.

First, loads of CO₂ dissolved into the newly formed oceans, where it formed carbonate precipitates that settled on the seabed. Then came the game-changer: green plants and algae evolved and started photosynthesis, absorbing CO₂ and pumping out oxygen.

Marine animals played their part too by building shells and skeletons from ocean carbonates. When these creatures died, their remains got buried under sedimentary rock layers over millions of years, locking carbon away in fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.

Remember This: Coal comes from ancient plant deposits, whilst oil and gas formed from tiny sea creatures called plankton!

Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change

Rising oxygen levels allowed complex life to evolve, but now human activities are messing with the atmospheric balance. Greenhouse gases (water vapour, methane, and CO₂) act like Earth's duvet, trapping heat to keep our planet warm enough for life.

Here's how it works: the sun sends short-wavelength radiation that greenhouse gases can't absorb, but Earth reflects back long-wavelength radiation that these gases trap brilliantly. They then re-radiate this energy in all directions, including back towards Earth.

Human activities are ramping up greenhouse gas levels through deforestation (fewer trees absorbing CO₂), burning fossil fuels (releasing stored carbon), agriculture (farm animals producing methane), and creating more waste that decomposes into CO₂ and methane.

Climate change consequences include melting polar ice caps, rising sea levels, changing rainfall patterns, more extreme weather, and shifts in where different species can survive.
