  • Nerve cells are designed for rapid signaling with long, branched connections.
  • Muscle cells are specialized for contraction and contain many mitochondria.
  • Root hair cells are adapted for absorbing water and minerals with a large surface area.

Definition: Specialized cells are cells that have developed specific features to perform particular functions within an organism.

Example: The long tail of a sperm cell allows it to swim efficiently towards the egg during fertilization.

Chromosomes and DNA

This page explains the relationship between chromosomes, genes, and DNA.

Key points:

  • Chromosomes are found in the nucleus and contain genes.
  • Genes are made up of DNA.
  • Humans have 46 chromosomes, with 23 pairs inherited from each parent.

Vocabulary: Chromosomes are structures in the cell nucleus that carry genetic information in the form of genes.

Highlight: The 23 pairs of chromosomes in human cells provide the genetic blueprint for an individual's traits and characteristics.

Cell Cycle

This page outlines the stages of the cell cycle, including growth, DNA replication, and mitosis.

Key points:

  • The cell grows and increases its subcellular structures.
  • DNA is duplicated in preparation for cell division.
  • During mitosis, chromosomes line up and are pulled apart by cell fibers.
  • New membranes form around each set of chromosomes, and the cytoplasm divides.

Definition: Mitosis is the process of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells.

Highlight: The cell cycle ensures that genetic material is accurately copied and distributed to new cells, maintaining the organism's growth and repair.

Stem Cells and Therapeutic Cloning

This page introduces the concept of stem cells and their potential applications in medicine.

Key points:

  • Stem cells can produce many undifferentiated cells.
  • Embryonic stem cells are found in early human embryos.
  • Stem cells can be used to replace faulty cells in the body.
  • Therapeutic cloning involves creating an embryo with the same genetic information as the patient.

Vocabulary: Therapeutic cloning is a process where an embryo is created with the same genetic material as a patient for the purpose of generating stem cells for medical treatment.

Highlight: The process and importance of therapeutic cloning stem cells lies in their potential to treat various diseases by replacing damaged or dysfunctional cells with healthy ones that are genetically matched to the patient.

Embryonic Screening

This page discusses the ethical considerations surrounding embryonic screening.

Key points: Arguments against embryonic screening:

  • It may imply that people with genetic conditions are undesirable.
  • There's a risk of it being used for selecting desired traits or races.
  • The screening process is expensive.

Arguments for embryonic screening:

  • It can prevent suffering by identifying genetic disorders early.
  • Treating disorders early can be more cost-effective in the long run.
  • Laws are in place to prevent misuse of the technology.

Highlight: The debate around embryonic screening highlights the complex ethical issues at the intersection of genetic technology and society.

Key points:

  • Diffusion is the spreading of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
  • The rate of diffusion is affected by the concentration gradient and temperature.
  • A steeper concentration gradient and higher temperature result in faster diffusion.

Definition: Diffusion is a passive process that does not require energy input and is crucial for many cellular processes.

Example: Oxygen diffusing from the air in the lungs into the bloodstream is an essential process for respiration in animals.

This app has made me feel so much more confident in my exam prep, not only through boosting my own self confidence through the features that allow you to connect with others and feel less alone, but also through the way the app itself is centred around making you feel better. It is easy to navigate, fun to use, and helpful to anyone struggling in absolutely any way.

The app's just great! All I have to do is enter the topic in the search bar and I get the response real fast. I don't have to watch 10 YouTube videos to understand something, so I'm saving my time. Highly recommended!

I know a lot of apps use fake accounts to boost their reviews but this app deserves it all. Originally I was getting 4 in my English exams and this time I got a grade 7. I didn’t even know about this app three days until the exam and it has helped A LOT. Please actually trust me and use it as I’m sure you too will see developments.
