Understanding Moments and Forces
Moments are basically the turning or twisting effect that happens when you apply a force. Think about using a spanner - the longer the handle, the easier it is to turn a bolt.
The formula is dead simple: Moment = Force × Perpendicular Distance. You measure moments in Newton metres (Nm), force in Newtons (N), and distance in metres . The key word here is "perpendicular" - you must measure the distance at right angles to the direction of your force.
When describing moments, always use clockwise or anti-clockwise directions rather than up or down. After all, we're talking about turning effects, not straight-line movement.
Quick Tip: If you're struggling to loosen something, use a longer tool - it increases the perpendicular distance and gives you more turning power!
