Spanish Writing Exam Structure

Your Spanish writing exam has three main question types that each require different skills. Photo card questions test your ability to describe what you see, whilst longer writing tasks let you show off your vocabulary range.

For Question 1 (photo card), use the handy PALM method. Start with P (people) using "Hay" or "Veo" plus "personas/hombre/mujer/niños". Then describe A (action) with "Está(n)" plus a verb ending in "-endo" like "jugando". Add L (location) with "Está(n) en" and finish with M (mood) using "parece(n)" plus an emotion.

Don't forget to mention the weather using "Hace buen tiempo" (good weather), "Hace mal tiempo" (bad weather), or "Hace frío" (it's cold). This extra detail shows you can observe and describe thoroughly.

Top Tip: Practice the PALM method with different photos at home - it becomes automatic once you've done it a few times!

Advanced Writing Techniques and Tenses

Questions 2 and 4 require 40-word and 90-word responses respectively. For 40 words, remember COFFIN, whilst 90-word answers need the full SCOFTINTI structure, which includes sophisticated opinions, connectives, frequency phrases, tenses, intensifiers, negatives, and time phrases.

Master your Spanish tenses to boost your marks. Use past tense with "fui/fuimos/fue" and regular verbs like "comí" (I ate) or "bailé" (I danced). Present tense works for photo cards with "están" plus "-endo" verbs. Future tense impresses examiners - try "voy a" (I'm going to), "me gustaría" (I would like), or "cuando sea grande" (when I'm older).

Learn these three essential idioms: "Es la leche" (it's brilliant), "Diría que" (I would say that), and "vale la pena si tuviera la oportunidad" (it's worth it if I had the opportunity). These phrases instantly make your Spanish sound more natural and sophisticated.

Remember: Question 3 focuses on translation skills between English and Spanish, so practice converting phrases both ways!
