You've got 35 minutes to tackle this Spanish reading paper, which is worth 16 marks total. The test is straightforward - just read Spanish texts and answer questions to show you understand what's happening.
Most questions (1-6) need answers in English, but question 7 requires Spanish answers. You don't need to write full sentences, which makes it much easier to get your points across quickly.
The marks for each question are shown in brackets, so you can see which ones are worth spending more time on. Smart test-takers use this to manage their time effectively.
Top Tip: Check the language required for each question before you start writing - it's easy to lose marks by answering in the wrong language!

These weather questions start you off gently with simple Spanish phrases. "Hoy hace mucho sol" means it's very sunny today, whilst "Hace frío esta tarde" tells you it's cold this afternoon.
You just need to match the Spanish weather description to the correct picture. Look for key words like "sol" (sun) and "frío" (cold) to guide you.
This type of question tests your basic vocabulary recognition - perfect for building confidence at the start of the exam.
Remember: Weather vocabulary is fundamental in Spanish, so practise phrases like "hace calor" (it's hot) and "llueve" (it's raining) regularly.

This question introduces you to Spanish food vocabulary through a restaurant scenario. Andrés mentions "pollo" (chicken), "tortilla de queso" (cheese omelette), "fresas" (strawberries), and "uvas" (grapes).
The phrase "Me encantan" means "I love" - this helps you understand his preferences. When he says he loves "el pollo y la fruta", you can work out he likes chicken and fruit.
Multiple choice questions like these test whether you can pick out specific information from longer Spanish texts.
Food Hack: Learn food groups in Spanish to tackle any restaurant-based questions confidently.

Lily's blog about buying presents introduces clothing vocabulary. She wants to buy "una chaqueta de piel" (a leather jacket) and "una camisa blanca" (a white shirt) for her friends.
The key phrase "quiero comprar" means "I want to buy", which signals this is about shopping. You need to identify the specific clothing items from the Spanish text.
Word recognition is crucial here - spotting "chaqueta" (jacket) and "camisa" (shirt) among the options gets you the marks.
Style Tip: Practice clothing words with colours and materials - it's a popular exam topic because it combines vocabulary and real-life situations.

Andrés describes his summer job as a waiter using "voy a trabajar como camarero". This future tense construction is important for understanding his plans.
He mentions not liking weekend work with "No me gusta trabajar los fines de semana" but enjoys customer contact. These personal opinions show how Spanish speakers express preferences about work.
Job vocabulary often appears in exams because it's relevant to teenagers thinking about their futures.
Career Move: Learn job titles and workplace phrases - they're essential for GCSE Spanish and real conversations with Spanish speakers.

This text about Andrés's father shows how to describe family members in Spanish. "Es muy simpático" means he's very nice, whilst "le gusta mucho estar en forma" explains he likes keeping fit.
The future plans "vamos a ir a correr" (we're going to go running) use another future construction. The setting "a la montaña" (to the mountain) adds location vocabulary.
Personal descriptions combine personality traits with hobbies and activities - perfect for building conversational Spanish skills.
Family Focus: Practice describing family members' personalities and interests - it's guaranteed to come up in speaking assessments too.

This extract from a Spanish novel introduces you to narrative reading. The new teacher arrives "en el invierno" (in winter) and finds the school "muy sucia" (very dirty).
Literary texts use slightly more complex language than everyday scenarios. Words like "llegó" (arrived) and "contenta" (happy) show past events and emotions.
Story comprehension tests your ability to follow a sequence of events and understand characters' reactions.
Reading Power: Don't worry if you don't understand every word in literary extracts - focus on the main events and feelings to answer the questions.

This final question is entirely in Spanish, testing your ability to read about cultural events. The San Antonio festival involves "fuegos artificiales" (fireworks) and a race through "el casco viejo" (the old town).
You need to complete sentences using words from a box, which tests reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge together. The text mentions controversy about whether the festival should continue.
Cultural texts expose you to Spanish traditions whilst building advanced reading skills - essential preparation for GCSE level work.
Culture Club: Reading about Spanish festivals and traditions helps you understand the language in its cultural context, making everything more memorable and meaningful.
