The easiest way to remember when to use ser is through the acronym DOCTOR. Use ser for descriptions, occupations, characteristics, time, origin, and relationships or possession. It's for permanent or inherent qualities that don't change easily.
Estar follows the PLACE rule: position, location, action, condition, and emotion. These are temporary states or situations that can change from moment to moment.
Look at these examples: "soy alto" , "estoy de pie" , and "está estudiando" . Notice how ser describes what you ARE whilst estar describes your current state or what you're doing.
Quick Tip: If you can add "right now" to the sentence and it makes sense, use estar!
