Digital Divides Across Latin America
Peru leads the Hispanic world in Facebook users, but internet access across Latin America tells a much more complex story. Many countries face serious barriers that prevent people from getting online.
Poverty and geography are the biggest obstacles to internet access in South America. The mountainous landscapes make it incredibly expensive to install internet infrastructure, meaning even wealthy people sometimes can't get connected. Bolivia has the most expensive internet access of any South American country, which explains why so few people can afford it.
Argentina's government launched 'Argentina Conectada' to tackle this problem by specifically targeting rural areas where internet access is poorest. Meanwhile, countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Honduras and Bolivia still have less than 5% internet penetration per 100 people, whilst Chile leads the way with 37.5%.
Quick Fact: Mexico City installed 25 digital kiosks to combat piracy by offering legal downloads of music and films - a project that other Latin American countries have since copied!
Piracy remains a massive issue across Latin America. You can buy pirated films at virtually any metro station or market in Mexico City because there's little punishment, widespread poverty, and film companies often don't bother distributing legally to these regions.

Social Media and the Smartphone Revolution
Social media preferences in the Hispanic world might surprise you. Spanish users heavily favour Facebook and a platform called Tuenti over Twitter, using them mainly for chatting and sharing photos rather than news consumption.
Tuenti, launched in 2006, was Spain's answer to Facebook but failed when it tried expanding across Europe and America in 2012. Twitter has grown steadily but remains less popular because it focuses on information sharing rather than social communication. MySpace has practically disappeared since losing users dramatically after 2008.
Cuba presents a unique case - they use intranet instead of internet, creating an isolated digital environment separate from the global web. This reflects the country's political approach to controlling information flow.
Tech Trend: Smartphone obsession is set to explode further across the Hispanic world, with devices playing bigger roles in education and healthcare!
The smartphone revolution is transforming how people access technology across Latin America. These devices are becoming essential tools for education and health services, though experts warn about the dangers of overexposure to artificial light from screens. Their rapid adoption means they're often the first and only way many people get online.
