Understanding Society and Culture
Society is basically a group of people who share the same way of life - think of it as your community on a massive scale. What makes each society unique is its culture, which includes everything from the values people believe in to the language they speak and the skills they pass down.
Social structures are like the building blocks of society - families, schools, and different social classes all fit together to create the bigger picture. These structures don't just sit there doing nothing; they're constantly interacting through social processes like socialisation, where you learn how to fit into society.
Social issues are the problems that affect real people's lives, from how well parents look after their children to caring for elderly relatives. These issues matter because they show us where society might need to improve.
Key Point: Values give us the big picture (like respecting life), whilst norms are the specific rules for different situations (like staying quiet in cinemas). Break these rules and you'll face sanctions - rewards for good behaviour or punishments for stepping out of line.
