The Rise of Symmetrical Families
Modern families are definitely more equal than they used to be, but we're not quite there yet. Symmetrical families - where couples share tasks equally through joint conjugal roles - are becoming increasingly common across the UK.
Sociologists like Willmott and Young argue that this shift towards equality is real and significant. Gershuny's research backs this up, showing that around 70% of couples now split their roles fairly equally, with no major gender divide in household responsibilities.
But here's where it gets interesting - not everyone agrees with this rosy picture. Feminist sociologist Ann Oakley argues that the symmetrical family idea is massively exaggerated. Her research reveals that whilst 72% of men claim they help their wives with household tasks, in reality most only take on one main role - being the financial provider.
Key Point: Only 1% of men take care of sick children according to Dex and Ward's research, showing that gender segregation in childcare and housework still exists.
Women in the Workplace: A Game Changer
The biggest shift towards family equality has come from women entering paid employment in massive numbers. When both partners work, the traditional housewife role becomes impossible to maintain, forcing couples to rethink how they divide domestic labour.
Fiona Devine's research shows that as women join the workforce, men have no choice but to get more involved in household work. Liberal feminists celebrate this change, arguing that women's economic independence is key to reducing inequality at home.
However, there's a catch that many families recognise. Gershuny describes something called "lagged adaptation" - essentially, even though men are doing more housework than before, it'll take another generation before they catch up to the amount women currently do.
