Karl Marx: The Revolutionary Thinker
Marx wasn't just critiquing society for fun - he was genuinely angry about how unfairly people were being treated during the Industrial Revolution. This massive change saw machines replacing workers, creating huge wealth gaps that still exist today.
His big idea was Marxism - a theory that society is basically one giant conflict between social classes. He identified two main groups: the bourgeoisie (upper class who own businesses and property) and the proletariat (working class who sell their labour). The constant tension between these groups is called class struggle.
Marx believed capitalism - our current economic system based on private ownership and profit - was the root of society's problems. He argued that the bourgeoisie use things like schools, media, and cultural institutions to spread their ideas and keep the working class in line.
Key Point: Marx wanted to replace capitalism with communism - a classless society where resources are shared equally and no one owns private property. Today, only 5 countries (China, Vietnam, Laos, Cuba, and North Korea) still claim to follow communist principles.

Emile Durkheim: The Society Doctor
Born in France in 1858, Durkheim took a completely different approach to understanding society. Influenced by philosopher Auguste Comte, he believed in positivism - using scientific methods and statistical data to study social behaviour, just like you'd study chemistry or biology.
Think of Durkheim as someone who saw society like a human body. He argued that institutions like family, religion, and education work like vital organs - each playing a crucial role in keeping society healthy and functioning properly.
His concept of collective conscience explains how shared beliefs and practices bind communities together. It's basically the invisible glue that makes people in the same society think and act in similar ways.
Fun Fact: Durkheim is considered the founder of functionalism because he was obsessed with figuring out what holds society together, rather than what tears it apart (unlike Marx!).
