Why Boys Struggle: External Pressures

Poor literacy skills are hitting boys hard, and it starts way before they even get to secondary school. Parents spend less time reading with their sons, and since mums do most of the reading at home, boys might see it as a "girly" thing. While girls develop language skills through their bedroom culture of chatting with mates, boys are often kicking footballs about instead.

The government isn't just sitting around though. They've launched loads of schemes to tackle this problem. The 'Reading Champions Scheme' brings in male role models to show boys that reading is cool, whilst 'Playing for Success' cleverly uses football to boost learning skills.

Globalisation has also thrown a massive spanner in the works for traditional male jobs. Since the 1980s, heavy industries like mining and shipbuilding have disappeared as companies moved to countries with cheaper labour. Mitsos and Browne reckon this has created an identity crisis for men - many boys now think "what's the point of getting qualifications if there are no proper jobs anyway?"

School Culture and the "Feminisation" Debate

Tony Sewell stirred up quite a storm by claiming schools have become too "feminised". He argues that schools now celebrate girly traits like being methodical and attentive, whilst ignoring traditionally masculine qualities like competitiveness and leadership. Sewell reckons coursework particularly favours girls and wants more final exams instead.

The shortage of male primary teachers is another hot topic. With only 14% of primary teachers being male, loads of boys have zero male role models at school. A YouGov survey found that 39% of boys aged 9-11 never have lessons with a male teacher, yet most boys said male teachers made them behave better and work harder.

But hang on - not everyone buys this argument! Barbara Read studied 51 teachers and found that female teachers are just as likely to use strict, "masculine" discipline. Her research suggests the whole "feminised school" idea might be complete rubbish.

'Laddish' subcultures are making things worse too. Working-class boys often get called "sissies" or face homophobic abuse if they try hard at school, so they reject education to protect their masculine image.
