Understanding Functionalism

Think of society as your body - every organ has a job to do, and they all need to work together for you to stay healthy. That's exactly how functionalism sees society, using what's called the organic analogy.

The theory focuses on how people generally agree on basic values and beliefs, known as collective consensus. This shared understanding helps society function smoothly because most people know what's expected of them. Value consensus works similarly but can apply to smaller groups within society.

Key thinkers like Durkheim and Parsons identified what society needs to survive. Durkheim highlighted four basic requirements: socialisation (learning society's rules), norms (expected behaviours), value consensus, and collective consensus. Meanwhile, Parsons focused on adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency as society's core needs.

Quick Tip: Remember that functionalism is a macro theory - it looks at the big picture of how entire societies work, rather than focusing on individual experiences.

The theory has strengths - it shows how important socialisation is and explains how different parts of society connect. However, critics argue it's too deterministic (assumes society controls our behaviour completely) and fails to explain conflict or social change effectively.
